THE SPEEDEMON
[ Rapidusdemonicus dorsonae (Sharpe, 2020) ]
X
“What’s that? I heard something scurrying along, through the underbrush. I’m sure,” exclaimed the boy who was on his first camping trip in the North Woods. He drew a little closer to the big, friendly, old guide, for the night was black, with only a tiny speck of a moon peeping once in a while through the clouds.
“Nothing to be worried about,” answered the guide. “It’s probably only a speedemon out chasing a rabbit. I reckon you never heard of a speedemon, did you?”
“No, I never did. What's he like?”
“He’s one of the queerest animals you ever heard of. He has a round body and five strong legs. It’s because of his speed that he’s the terror of the small animals. He doesn’t hurt them, but he loves to chase them and, often in the cool of the evening, you can see him speeding along like a cartwheel, his ball-like body spinning round and round as he reaches out one leg right after another. You have to have sharp eyes to see him, ’cause he travels like lightning.”
