THE TREEHOPPER
[ Humulusarboreus charlesbrownella (Sharpe, 2020) ]
X
“Listen!” cried the youngest tenderfoot. “I heard some sort of animal making a queer noise just then.”
“Maybe it was an animal,” answered his guide, whose face had been beaten by the winds of the North Woods for many years, “and then again maybe it was a treehopper.”
“You mean a grasshopper, don’t you?” asked the boy.
“No, sir I said treehopper, and treehopper is what I mean. I don’t suppose you’ve heard of him before, because I guess the woods here are the only place where he’s found. He’s a funny little fellow that lives in the trees and hops about from one to another.”
“What kind of noise does he make?”
“Well, now, that’s just where the trouble is—why the treehopper is so unpopular up here. You see, he can imitate any animal or bird in the woods. Lots of times when you think you hear some animal or bird what you really hear is the treehopper making a noise like one.”
